Term Category: Anatomy

Subcostal muscles reside between the ribs. These muscles are secondary expiratory muscles aiding in the movement of the ribcage during exhalation. They originate from the inner surface of the ribs and insert two to three ribs lower. When they contract, they depress the ribs, compressing the lungs and forcing air out.
