Guidelines

The guidelines below are subject to change without notice. The following sections will provide guidance on various aspects of article submission and formatting. The most important things to follow: be original, be ethical, be concise, and submit complete and well-polished work.

Submission Checklist

• The manuscript has been spell checked and grammar checked
• All references mentioned in the Reference List are cited in the text, and vice versa
• Permission has been obtained for use of copyrighted material from other sources
• One author has been selected as the corresponding author
• An anonymized version for peer-review where identifying information (author names, schools, etc) have been removed.
• A 300-word or "So What" statement.

Ethics in Research

• Authors must present an accurate account of their work. Submissions of original work should include sufficient details for other to reproduce their work.
• Sources must be appropriately cited for all non-original ideas and concepts. Plagiarism in all forms is unethical and is unacceptable.

The Use of Generative AI

• Generative AI may be used during the writing process. However disclosure of the use of AI must be included in the text.
• The Generative AI should not be included in the authors.
• Be sure to carefully evaluate the work of the generative AI, the authors are responsbile and accountable for the work.

Use of Inclusive Language

• Articles should make sure of inclusive language. We recommend avoiding terms that refer to age, gender, race, ethnicity, culture, sexual orientation, disability or health condition unless they are relevant and valid.

Authorship

• All authors should have made significant contributions throughout the entire process, including but not limited to design and concept, research, writing, and editing.

• Upon acceptance of an article, authors will be asked to complete a Journal Publishing Agreement. An e-mail will be sent to the corresponding author confirming receipt of the manuscript together with a link to the online version of this agreement.

Authors Rights

• Retain the rights to use their research data freely
• Receive proper attribution and credit for their work
• Use and share their works for scholarly purposes in their classroom, speaking engagements, in a thesis or dissertation (non-commercial).
• Re-use if extending the article to book length, compilation of their own works, or re-use portions in future works.

Preparation

Peer Review Process

The Journal of Voice Science & Pedagogy uses a double-blind peer review. After submission and initial acceptance of the article identifying information will be redacted from your article before being read by two or three reviewers who are knowledgable on the topic. The role of the reviewers is to critically read and comment on possible or necessary changes to the article. These reviewers also provide suggestions for the possible acceptance or rejection of the article.

A double-blind peer review is used to remove possible positive or negative biases that could exist based on name, reputation, education, or other factors.

Research Subjects, Ethical Approval of Studies and Informed Consent

If your study included new research with human participants approval by an Institutional Review Board and the informed consent of participants is required. A statement is required in the methods section indicating the approval of the Institutional Review Board and the informed consent of participants.

Word Processing Software

Files should be submitted as .docx files, utilizing a single-column format. Avoid the use of significant formating which will be removed and replaced during publishing. Tables, figures, and graphics should be embedded in the document and additionally included separately during submission. It is strongly encouraged that you use the spell check and grammar functions of your word processing software.

Manuscript Guidelines

Manuscript

The manuscript should be submitted in American English and divided into sections with appropriate headings. Author(s) should use the Chicago Manual of Style as a guide.

Cover Letter

Please include a cover letter with the following information for the corresponding author:
• Name
• Mailing Address
• Email Address
• Phone Number

Title Page

• The title page should include:
• The Title
• List of Authors and affiliations
• Corresponding Author's mailing address, email address, & phone number

Introduction

State the objective and provide necessary background. Avoid a detailed literature review and summary of the results.

Materials & Methods

Provide a sufficiently detailed account to allow the research to be reproduced. If quoting methods from a previous source be sure to cite the source.

Results

A clear and concise section on the results.

Discussion

Explore the significance of the results. Can be combined with the results section when appropriate.

Conclusion

State the main conclusions of the study as a stand alone section or subsection of the discussions section.

Appendices

Include appendices as needed, identified as A, B, etc.

Abstract

A 300 word or less abstract should be included using subheadings as appropriate (Objectives/Hypothesis, Study Design, Methods, Results, Conclusions). Abstracts are often presented separately from the full article text so it must be able to stand on its own. Abbreviations and general statements should be avoided.

Immediately following the abstract provide a maximum of 6 keywords, using American English spellings.

"So What" Statement

A 300 word or less "so what" statement, written in American English. The purpose of this section is to provide singers and teachers with a layman's definition of how your research should change the way they approach singing/speech or teaching singing/speech.

Acknowledgements

Provide acknowledgements in a separate section at the end of the article before the references. Do not include them elsewhere.

Footnotes

Use footnotes sparingly, numbering them consecutively.

References

All references cited in the text must be referenced in the references section and vice versa all references must be cited in the text. Please use the Chicago style guide for more information.
