Pulmonary Alveoli

Term Category: Anatomy

Pulmonary alveoli are small, grape-like structures located at the end of the bronchioles in the lungs. These tiny air sacs are responsible for facilitating the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide during respiration. Surrounded by a network of capillaries, pulmonary alveoli provide a vast surface area for efficient gas exchange. Oxygen from inhaled air diffuses into the bloodstream, while carbon dioxide, a waste product, is removed from the blood and exhaled. The pulmonary alveoli play a crucial role in ensuring the body receives the oxygen it needs for cellular function and removing carbon dioxide, maintaining a healthy respiratory system.
