The Velum, more commonly called the soft palate, is the soft tissue that makes up the back portion of the roof of the mouth. It consists of five muscles: the Tensor veil palatine, palatoglossus, palatopharyngeus, elevator veli palatini, and the musculus uvulae. The velum is involved in closing off the nasal cavity, swallowing, breathing, and production of velar consonants ng, k, and g in English.
