The Tongue is a complex group of muscles used for eating, swallowing, and facilitating speech. There are four intrinsic muscles, the superior longitudinal, inferior longitudinal, transverse, and vertical muscles. Additionally there are four extrinsic muscles, the genioglossus, hyoglossus, styloglossus, and palatoglossus. Each muscle serves to allow the complex movements the the tongue.
