Ossification is the process of bone formation or the gradual conversion of other tissues, typically cartilage, into bone. Ossification is a part of the development and maturation of the laryngeal cartilages, such as the thyroid cartilage. The ossification of cartilaginous structures in the larynx can influence voice quality and pitch control.
