Strengthening Head Voice
Overview

Hi, and welcome to Strengthening Head Voice. I’m really glad you’re here, because this is one of the most important—and most commonly misunderstood—areas of singing.

Let’s start with this:

Most singers don’t begin their training with a strong head voice. And there’s a good reason for that.

The majority of us speak with a relatively low pitch—especially in cultures that value vocal authority and resonance. That means our cricothyroid muscles, which are the primary muscles responsible for stretching the vocal folds and producing head voice—like a rubber band being pulled tighter—don’t get much use in everyday life.

In other words, your body hasn’t been practicing this coordination regularly… so of course it feels unfamiliar or weak when you first try it.

That’s what we’re here to change.

This course is designed to walk you through the process of discovering, strengthening, and eventually mastering your head voice coordination. We’ll start with clear definitions—what head voice actually is, how it’s different from falsetto or mix—and we’ll give you tools to evaluate where you’re starting from.

Then we’ll use targeted exercises to build strength and control—focusing on efficiency, vocal health, and long-term growth.

You’ll explore descending scales, vocal function exercises, sustained tones, and eventually apply everything to songs you already love to sing.

Each lesson is short, focused, and practical—designed to fit into your real life, whether you’ve got 10 minutes between classes or a warm-up before rehearsal. And while each lesson is short, the process it introduces might take days or even weeks. That’s normal.

Here’s the part most singers don’t hear upfront:
Head voice development is a long-term process.

If you’re hoping for a quick fix, I want to offer a better deal: a long-term skill that grows with you and pays dividends for years.

You’ll probably notice improvements in coordination and comfort within a few weeks—but full control, endurance, and the ability to use head voice confidently in songs across different styles? That’s something that builds over months and months of consistent practice.

And that’s actually a good thing—because real growth in singing is never wasted.

This isn’t just about “singing high.” It’s about building a skill that will serve your voice for a lifetime. Strengthening your head voice improves your overall range, supports your mix, improves your passaggio transitions, and gives you more expressive options in everything from musical theatre to pop to classical.

It’s absolutely worth the time.

HOW TO MAKE THE MOST OF THIS COURSE

Here are a few quick tips to help you get the most out of this course:

Go slow. Some exercises may seem simple, but they’re doing important internal work. Think of it like strength training—you wouldn’t max out every day at the gym, and your voice needs the same thoughtful pacing.

Listen to your voice. You’re going to get feedback from your body: signs of fatigue, signs of ease, signs of resistance. Pay attention. You’re not just learning technique—you’re learning how to feel and trust what’s going on in your voice.

Track your progress. We’ll give you simple prompts to record, reflect, and revisit. Don’t skip this step—it’s easy to miss how far you’ve come unless you’re looking back.

Ask questions. If something isn’t clear or you want feedback, we’re here to help. Use the community, reach out, or look into our Feedback by VoSci option if you want more detailed guidance.

I know head voice can feel elusive, especially if it’s new or if you’ve had past frustration with it. But I want to encourage you: this is absolutely something you can build. Not overnight. Not in a week. But over time—with smart exercises, consistent practice, and a curious mindset—you’ll unlock parts of your voice you didn’t know were there.

So take a deep breath, get comfortable, and let’s begin.

I’ll see you in Lesson 1!
