Day 24: Comparing Multiple Performances
Over the last two days, you’ve studied one performance of your chosen song—first for what you liked, then for what you didn’t. Today, we widen the scope.
You’ll listen to 2–3 different singers perform the same song. This could be studio recordings, live performances, or cover versions. The goal is to notice the differences in how each singer approaches the song, and to decide whether you like those differences or not—and, if possible, why.
Before you start, it may be helpful to refresh your ear by listening once more to your original chosen performance.
Today’s Task:
- Listen to 2–3 other singers performing the same song.
- For each version, note the key differences in:
- Phrasing
- Breath use
- Vowel and resonance choices
- Dynamics
- Rhythmic placement
- Ornamentation/agility
- Registration choices
- Articulation and diction
- Tone color
- For each difference, mark whether you like it or don’t like it. If possible, write down why.
How to Practice:
- Start by replaying the original version you’ve analyzed over the past two days.
- Listen to the first new performance in full without stopping.
- On the second listen, pause to note differences from the original.
- Repeat the process with the second (and third) versions.
- Keep your notes organized—label each version so you can reference them later this week.
Why This Matters:
Hearing multiple interpretations sharpens your ability to spot technical and stylistic choices. You’ll start to see patterns in what you gravitate toward—and what you want to avoid—in your own singing.
Tomorrow: We’ll review your notes from the last three days and identify the skills you’d need to borrow or adapt specific elements for your own version.
