Overtones, another term for harmonics, are additional frequencies that accompany the fundamental frequency of a sound. When a musical instrument or voice produces a pitch, it generates a complex waveform consisting of multiple frequencies. The lowest frequency, known as the fundamental frequency (F0), determines the pitch. Overtones are integer multiples of the fundamental frequency and contribute to the timbre or tone color of the sound.
