The zygomaticus is a facial muscle comprised of two parts: the zygomaticus major and the zygomaticus minor. The zygomaticus major originates from the zygomatic bone, located on the lateral side of the face near the eye, and inserts into the corner of the mouth. The zygomaticus minor originates from the zygomatic bone as well and inserts into the upper lip. Together, these muscles play a significant role in facial expressions, particularly in smiling, as they contract to elevate the corners of the mouth and create a cheerful expression.
