Vibrato is an oscillation of pitch during phonation. To define vibrato we measure both the rate or speed of the vibrato and the extent that the pitch fluctuates. All singing even “straight tone” singing contains vibrato but slow vibrato rates may not be detectable to the ear. The acceptable rate and extent vary by genre.
