The True Vocal Folds are small complex structures located in the larynx. Their primary purpose is to protect the airway from liquids and solids entering the lungs. Additionally they serve as a regulator for airflow and the production of sound. The vocal folds are made up of multiple layers allowing for quick complex vibrations to occur. The five primary layers are the Epithelium, superficial lamina propria, intermediate lamina propria, deep lamina propria, and the thyroarytenoid muscle.
