Stereocilia are tiny hair-like structures found in the cochlea. Stereocilia play a fundamental role in the perception of sound and pitch accuracy. When sound waves enter the ear, they cause these structures to move, which, in turn, triggers electrical signals that the brain interprets as sound. Loud noises, disease, and toxins can damage the stereocilia which cannot regenerate.
