Soft Palate

The soft palate, or velum, is a flexible structure positioned at the back of the mouth’s roof, behind the hard palate. It acts as a crucial barrier between the oral and nasal passages during speech, swallowing, and breathing. When raised, it closes the nasal passage for speech sounds and directs airflow into the mouth. During swallowing, it prevents food from entering the nasal passages.
