The glottis refers to the opening between the vocal folds. It is the space where airflow passes through during breathing and where vocalization occurs. When the vocal folds are adducted (closed), the glottis is closed, preventing air passage and enabling phonation. When the vocal folds are abducted (open), the glottis is open, allowing for unrestricted airflow during breathing.
